35HM, 34CrMo4, 1.7220 - specification and applications

Structural hardened steel with the best mechanical properties at 40-70mm dimensions, designed for water or oil hardening, and inductiv or fire surface hardening after a thermal improvement after which the hardness of the surface is between 52-57 HRC.

35HM is used for heavy-duty construction parts, machines or equipment where high ductility, abrasion resistance and high temperatures up to 500℃ are required. In many cases, more expensive nickel grades can be substituted by this grade.

The 35HM steel and its substitute 34CrMo4 is used for the production of shafts, high-pressure press columns, pipe fittings, hammer shafts, spindles of large machine tools, screws and nuts, loaded screws, steam turbine parts, turbochargers, axles, rods, rotor discs, covers, gears, crank shafts, engine and engine parts, large machine tool shafts, and toothed rims.

Heat treatment processes:

  • Annealing with a slow cooling at 680 - 720℃
  • Normalization at 850-880 ℃ with adjustable cooling rate depending on a product dimensions, including softening for optimum workability
  • Normalization at 850 - 880 ℃ heating until the temperature equals at the entire cross section of the material with cooling in calm air
  • Hardening at 830 - 860 ℃ with cooling in water, or at 840 - 870 ℃ in oil
  • Tempering at 540 - 680℃ with cooling in air.
