Alloy 316LVM, 1.4441, X2CrNiMo18-15-3, UNS S31673 - description

1.4441 is a Cr-Ni-Mo high-purity steel for medical applications with exceptional resistance to physiological environments. The alloy defy most acids and comply with the ISO 5832-1 and ASTM F-138 norms for implants and medical instruments (it was first described in now inactive DIN 17443 norm).

Low carbon content mean 1.4441 do not form chromium carbide during welding, which makes any subsequent heat treatment unncessary.

Applications

1.4441 tube wires and strips are used for trauma fixation devices such as bone screws, spinal systems and compression plates. The 1.4441 bars are forged into replacement hip joints.
