Inconel 600 – summary

Inconel 600 is one of the most popular superalloys on the market. It proved to be creep-resistant and heat-resistant, keeping good mechanical properties at high-temperature. Alloy 600 has good resistance to many hot, corrosive chemicals.

Inconel 600 – application

Alloy 600 is a versatile superalloy, which can be used in a variety of applications, involving high-temperature and corrosive conditions. On the other hand, it is also used in cryogenic temperature.

Material 2.4816 is used:

  • In aviation: engine and airframe components like exhaust liners, turbine seals and safety wires.
  • In metal processing industry: furnance muffles, retors, baskets, trays and other heat treatment equipment.
  • In chemical, petrochemical and papermaking industries: heaters, evaporator tubes, stills, fittings and fixtures for handling acids and sulfides.
  • In power industry: nuclear reactors components. The alloy designated specifically to this purpose is Inconel 600T.
  • In automotive: high temperature sensors, gaskets, parts of spark plugs and airbag systems.

Inconel 600 – temperature range, temperature and mechanical properties

Alloy 600 is not brittle in room-temperature and that doesn't change very much when temperature drops, even below -190 OC.

Alloy 600 retains good mechanical properties in high-temperature. Also, it does not embrittle, when exposed to high-temperature, even for long period of time.

Inconel 600 – Working and Welding

Inconel 600 is suitable for either hot and cold working, but only cold work hardens and strengthens this alloy.

Cold work along with thermal treatment is the main way to enhance various mechanical properties of this material.

Heat Treatment of Alloy 600

Annealing – softens the material. Proper treatment takes 15 minutes in about 1010 OC.

Solutioning – dissolves the carbides and increases grain size, which is good for creep resistance and rupture strength. Proper treatment takes 1 to 2 hours at 1090-1150 OC.

Alloy 600 – Joining

Inconel 600 is suitable for welding and soldering. Any conventional welding technique can be applied.

Suitable welding filler materials are:

  • Inconel®Welding Electrode 182
  • Inconel®Filler Metal 82
  • Incoflux 4 Submerged Arc Flux – for submerged welding

Chemical resistance

The composition of Inconel 600 is well-chosen to resist variety of corrosive elements.

Regarding chemical properties, Inconel 600:

  • Has unique resistance to chlorides, even hot and concentrated. It is immune to chloride stress-corrosion cracking.
  • Has good resistance to high-temperature oxidation.
  • Is very resistant to corrosion under reducing conditions.
  • Has very good high-temperature nitrogen resistance.
  • Has good resistance to carburization in high-temperature.
  • Has exeptionally good resistance to hot alkalies, it can also resist many acid salts.
  • Is not resistant to nitric acid.
  • Does not resist high-temperature sulfidation, thus is not used for parts most exposed to hot corrosion. More on this subject in the "corrosion" tab of the superalloys article.
