AISI 309S, 1.4833, X12CrNi23-13 - description and use

Stainles chrome-nickel heat-resistant to high temperatures steel up to the 1000 °C, in case of heavily loaded mechanical parts creep resistant to 700 °C.

H23N13 is a grade with austenitic structure. In air and oxidizing gases, the grade is resistant to temperatures up to 1000 ℃, however, in a sulfur-containing environment, the steel withstands temperatures up to 900 ℃. The steel is also resistant to carburizing, nitriding and carbonitriding atmospheres.

We should also mention the tendencies to the brittleness of steel and diminishing impact strength, which occurs when working in the range of 750 - 800 ℃. Brittleness is associated with the tendency of the formation of two-phase α + γ structures and the secretion of the sigma phase.

In many cases, the H23N13 grade is used on parts of chemical apparatus operating at elevated temperatures, hence often materials with a given chemical composition can be classified as acid-resistant steel.

Due to the high ductility of steel, machining of the above-mentioned species is significantly impeded. H23N13 materials and equivalents are used for the production of furnace parts, salt bath crucibles.
