18H2N2, 18CrNi8, 1.5920 - specifications and applications

Structural steel for carburizing with high content of chromium and nickel, designed for particularly stressed parts of machines with large cross-sections, which require high strength, resistance to variable loads, fatigue, impact resistance and ductility of the core. Used in the production of large gears, disc wheels, pivots, shafts in the machine industry, grade 18H2N2 achieves surface hardness in the range of 59 - 65 HRC after carburizing.

Mechanical properties of 18CrNi8 / 18H2N2

  • Tensile strength, Rm: 1230 - 1470 MPa
  • Yield strength, Re: >830 MPa
  • Elongation, A: >7%
  • Necking, Z: >30%
  • Hardness in annealed condition: <235 HB

Heat treatment processes of 18CrNi8 / 18H2N2 steel

  • Softening annealing at 650 - 700℃
  • Normalising annealing at 870 - 900℃
  • Carburizing at 880 - 950℃
  • Carbonitriding at 860 - 930℃
  • Hardening I in water or oil after carburizing at 840 - 870℃
  • Annealing after carburizing at 630 - 650℃
  • Hardening II in water or oil after carburizing at 800 - 830℃
  • Tempering at 170 - 200℃
