16NiCrMo12 - application and description
Structural steel 16NiCrMo12 is an alloy grade for thermo-chemical treatment - carburizing. It is mainly used in the aviation industry for particularly heavy duty parts and components. The 16NiCrMo12 steel is a grades mostly used to make special screws, sleeves, drive shafts, cogwheels, and connecting rods.
Mechanical properties of 16NiCrMo12 for 10-60mm range dimensions:
- Tensile strength, Rm: 980 - 1520 MPa
- Yield point, Re: 735 - 980 MPa
- Elongation, A: 9 - 10%
- Notch toughness, KCU: 32,5 - 42,5 J
- Hardness in annealed condition < 250 HB
- Hardness after isothermal annealing, 190 - 237 HB
- Hardness after spheroidizing annealing < 225 HB
Heat treatment processes:
- Normalising annealing at 830 - 860 °C
- Annealing with isothermal transformation at 800 - 840 ℃, with cooling at 620 ℃ for 5 hours
- Quenching at 820 - 840℃ or 790 - 810℃
- Tempering at 160 - 200℃
