In the United States, the first projects of molten salt reactors (MSR), classified as Generation IV nuclear reactors, are being implemented. These reactors are intended to be a safer and less burdensome alternative to water-cooled reactors. In this article, we will explore the operation of molten salt reactors and the engineering challenges they face, with particular emphasis on the nickel superalloy Hastelloy® N, which is crucial to their functionality.
