35SG - specification and applications

35SG is a structural steel with medium hardenability, good ductility and very good durability, which is designed for thermal improvement in oil, water or surface hardening. Due to the increased content of manganese, steel has a much better abrasion resistance than other low alloy structural steels.

Materials of this particular grade achieve the best strengths at the dimensions of 30-40mm in cross-section, and due to the possibility of surface hardening they can safely substitute some of the carburizing species. 35SG material is one of the species that unfortunately has a tendency to have a coarse-grained structure and temper brittleness. To prevent temper brittleness, steel is hardened in water or oil.

In the heat-treated state, 35SG is used to produce small parts for medium-duty vehicles. In the case of surface hardening, it is used for shafts and smaller rollers. Products with the aforementioned chemical composition are not suitable for welding, but in situations where welding is required, the steel must be heated to a suitable temperature prior to welding.

The 35SG grade is used in the manufacture of medium-duty components in the machine industry such as generators, high speed gear units, gear wheels, turbine shafts, bushings, vehicle axles, rings, gear wheels, disc rotors, crankcases, pins, heavy-duty nuts and bolts, levers, crank shafts, joysticks, controls, rollers or piston rods.
