1.4372, X12CrMnNiN17-7-5, AISI 201, 1H17N4G9 – description

The steel is used for household appliances (pots, trays, sinks, washing machines, refrigerators), dairy equipment (tanks, vats, pasteurizers, centrifuges), brewery equipment (fermentation tanks, barrels), catering equipment (refrigerated cabinets, buffet tables, but pressed boilers for cooking salty dishes must be saturated after forming), equipment and fittings in the chemical, petrochemical and paper industries (heat exchangers, coolers, tanks, pumps, pipelines), architectural facade and interior window frames and other elements, automotive accessories (wipers, bumpers, hubcaps), equipment for passenger trains and ships, as well as medical and dental instruments and vessels.

The steel is non-magnetic, ductile (even in low temperature), very drawable, weldable, highly strain-hardenable, has good yield strength and can be easy polished, either by mechanical or electrochemical means. On the downside, it has poor machinability.

The steel is resistant to urban, rural and non-extreme industrial air, distilled, fresh and river water, salt solutions (nitrates, phosphates, chromates, carbonates, some organic acids) and food products (milk, beer, coffee, tea, oil, alcohol, juice).

The steel is partly resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion, as well as inorganic acids, for example nitric acid.

The steel is not resistant to intergranular corrosion, chloride induced stress corrosion cracking, and reducing environments (e.g. hydrocloric acid), as well as sulphates and chlorides.

The steel belongs to welding group ISO 8.3. It can be welded manually with SMAW and GMAW methodes. Preheating is not required. Afterheating is unnecessary in most cases, but if the weld joint is supposed to operate in an environment conducive to intergranular corrosion, the weld joint should be heated to more that 1050 °C and cooled in water or air.
